Toe Walking

Toe Walking occurs when kids walk on their tiptoes. It can be normal for a new walker to begin toe walking. However, as the child’s walking matures, they should not be toe walking. If toe walking occurs past the age of 2, please consult with one of our Occupational or Physical Therapists. They can do a screening to help determine the cause of the toe walking. In addition, it may be beneficial to attend the gait clinic to determine if shoe modifications or bracing is warranted. Gait Clinic is offered in association with Hanger, Inc.

Whats the Big Deal?

Toe walking can be caused by:

  • Sensory processing issues (sensitivity to touch)
  • Torticollis
  • Leg length discrepancies
  • Vestibular disorders
  • Underlying disorders
  • Idiopathic (meaning the cause is unknown)

Early treatment can prevent:

  • Serial casting
  • Surgery to lengthen the Achilles
